The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming looks especially powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Several the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.

When these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
