Going California Sober: Research Suggests Cannabis Could Assist in Reducing Drinking Consumption

New scientific investigation published in the American Journal of Psychiatry proposes that embracing a “California sober” approach might substantially help individuals lower their alcohol consumption.

Research Methodology and Bar Lab Scenario

A team of Brown University conducted a unique study where participants were provided with marijuana joints to smoke before visiting a specially designed simulated bar environment.

  • Participants could choose to drink up to eight mini alcoholic beverages.
  • The experiment was conducted on three occasions with varying tetrahydrocannabinol levels: high potency, 3.1%, and a 0.03% marijuana.

Great care was taken to mimic a authentic bar atmosphere, complete with dim lighting and drinks on tap to ensure participant authenticity.

“Our goal was to make sure that when presented with the chance, you would be highly motivated to consume alcohol,” stated the lead researcher.

Significant Results and Effects on Drinking

Results revealed a notable decrease in drink intake after subjects smoked marijuana:

  • Alcohol consumption dropped by 19% after consuming 3.1% THC marijuana.
  • The drop was more pronounced with 7.2% THC cannabis, leading to a 27% decrease versus the control.

Wider Trends and Future Research

Increased legal access has driven a major surge in cannabis usage, which has doubled over the last ten years.

Meanwhile, drink use is at a record low, with many turning to substitutes like marijuana.

Crucial to note that forty percent of trial subjects were diagnosed with alcohol dependence.

While cannabis could serve as a possible alternative to excessive alcohol use, researchers warn that more research is required.

“We’re not ready to advise people seeking treatment for alcohol, ‘Go ahead and substitute marijuana, and it will be effective for you,’” a study author commented.
